Top tips to get you motivated to go to the gym

February is a tricky month for health and fitness. The novelty has well and truly worn off all those New Year’s resolutions about eating healthily and getting more exercise. It’s cold and dark and spring seems forever away. The temptation to hide under the duvet is stronger than ever. So how do you beat the winter blues and get motivated to go to the gym?
Just Do It
Don’t give yourself a choice. If you spend even ten minutes in the morning debating whether you can be bothered to go to the gym that day, you’re wasting time and energy. Put it in your diary and stick to it like you would to any other social or work appointment. Or think of going to the gym as being in the same category as showering or brushing your teeth: It just needs to happen as part of your everyday routine.
Variety is the spice of life
One of the main motivation killers is monotony. But going to the gym doesn’t need to be boring! Research some new exercise classes or just try a change of scenery. With many gyms now offering a one-day gym pass, you can try out all sorts of different places without committing yourself.
Don’t break the bank
Money is tight for everyone these days, and many of us have had to forego all sorts of little luxuries. It can feel like going to the gym falls into that category. But think again: Your health isn’t really something you can afford to scrimp on. And taking care of your fitness doesn’t need to be extravagant. Don’t commit to the first gym you try; shop around for the best discounts and introductory offers. Gym pass gyms offer great value for money, since there are no membership or joining fees you just pay for the actual sessions you spend at the gym. Using gym passes isn’t just a great way of keeping track of your spending, it also means that you can supplement gym workouts with free alternatives such as walking or cycling, without feeling that you’re not making full use of your gym membership.
Build in rewards
Schedule little rewards for yourself for going to the gym. They don’t need to be extravagant, just a little something to look forward to. Think half an hour in the gym sauna after your workout or a coffee with friends (but, for the sake of your health and your wallet, NOT an enormous takeaway or pub crawl!!). Or make your workout a social time buy a friend a gym pass and get fit together.
